For the past fourteen years the grade five students have been offered an opportunity to participate in a community service program. All students are given the option of service within the school or a home/neighborhood project. This is a voluntary commitment and takes place during recess or before or after school times. Although the program is optional we have had 100% participation so far!
Currently at The Hansen School all fifth grade students do 12 or more hours of community service during the school year. This service is selected by student interest and the options include helping in the classrooms, office, and cafeteria or at dismissal time. It could be tutoring, gardening or mentoring others. Hopefully this is only the beginning of a lifetime of community service as it offers the student a sense of resposibility and achievement within their community.
