Setting Nutrition Education Goals
Students will receive nutrition education that provides the knowledge they need to adopt healthy lifestyles. The 5-2-1-0 message (at least 5 fruits/vegetables a day, no more than two hours of screen time a day, one hour of exercise a day, and zero tobacco use) will be promoted in the West School. The school will promote healthy nutrition and physical activity through the Team Nutrition program.
Setting Physical Activity Goals
A quality physical education program is an essential component for all students to learn about and participate in physical activity. Physical activity should be included in a school’s daily education program from grades pre-K through 12. Physical activity includes regular instructional physical education, in accordance with the Massachusetts Health Curriculum Framework.
The current Physical Education goal of 90 hours per school year should be incorporated into the school day and into after-school programming to the extent possible. Physical education will build interest and proficiency in the skills, knowledge and attitudes essential to a lifelong physically active lifestyle. The goal of physical activity will encourage self-discipline, develop motor skills and promote activities that can be carried out over the course of the student’s lives.
Setting Goals for Measurement and Evaluation
Each year students will assess their own nutritional habits and level of physical activity using a short questionnaire and demonstrate their current understanding of these concepts by answering an open-ended, or key, question. This assessment will be repeated at the end of the school year as a way of helping students and teachers reflect/ measure and evaluate changes in student behavior and knowledge.
