June 2008
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
How the year has flown by! June is upon us as we culminate units of study and celebrate the learning that has taken place. The growth in our students has been outstanding and the effort on the part of the teachers, parents, and students equally as formidable. I would like to use this format to recognize one especially outstanding teacher, Mrs. Hunt. Unfortunately for us, Mrs. Hunt is retiring at the close of this year. She has had a phenomenal career and is held in very high regard by her colleagues, students and parents. We will miss seeing her every day and hope she will be back to visit. I wish her a long, healthy retirement and wish you a safe, happy summer! Thank you for all of your support!
Sincerely,
David N. Barner, Principal
A READING MESSAGE
Is Your Child a Fluent Reader?
Do you know what it means for your child to be a fluent reader? Fluent reading at every level is important. As an early reader, your child is fluent if he reads like he is talking. Phrases are read together and your child notices punctuation. Later, your child reads smoothly in longer, meaningful phrases with effective expression and continues to attend to punctuation. Eventually, he reads accurately with appropriate pacing and expression.
Why is this so important? Recent research shows that readers who read fluently have a better understanding of text. Meaning is maintained over long and complex selections. To do this, skilled readers are not only able to identify words accurately but also recognize them instantly as well as scan words efficiently as they problem solve text.
You can help your child become a fluent reader by reading aloud to her and providing opportunities to listen to books on tape. It is also important for your child to read every day and even revisit familiar books.
Summertime is a great time to reread favorite and familiar books!
Happy reading!
BE SAFE IN THE SUN

Ultraviolet rays (UV) are the strongest between the hours of 10:00 and 3:00.
Have a nice summer!
