ELL Student Population
- The Stoughton ELL program has approximately 200 students at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Our ELL student body is made up of students from all over the world. Some of the many languages spoken by students are: Arabic, Chinese, French, Gujarati, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Tagalog.
ELL Programs
- The ELL program at the elementary level (Kindergarten - 5th) is based at the West Elementary School. Students who qualify for the ELL program and are from another school district (South, Gibbons, Hansen, and Dawe schools), are able to receive free bus transportation to and from the West Elementary School. The O'Donnell Middle School and Stoughton High School each house their own ELL program.
- ELL students at the elementary level are assigned to a general education classroom with children their own age and grade level. Based on an ELL student's language proficiency, they will receive additional English language support in small group instruction outside of the classroom. These small group instruction classes are approximately 40-45 minutes long and may meet one to two times per day, depending on student's language proficiency level. ELL instruction is taught by licensed ELL Specialists. All lessons are taught in English.
- ELL students at the middle and high school levels attend general education content classes in addition to ELL classes several times a week.
Curriculum
- The ELL Curriculum is based on grade level standards and Massachusetts state standards (English Language Proficiency Benchmarks and Outcomes). ELL specialists use Sheltered English Instruction teaching methods to assist students in learning the language and information needed to understand and participate in the general education classroom.
- ELL specialists and grade level classroom teachers work as partners to provide all students with opportunities for participation in class activities.
- ELL students' Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing proficiencies are assessed yearly with tests mandated by the State of Massachusetts. The MEPA (Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment - Reading and Writing) and the MELA-O (Massachusetts English Language Assessment - Oral) are administered in October for new ELL students and in March for all ELL students. The results of these assessments are sent to Parents/Guardians via mail.
